Using a blog for Magento SEO

Using a blog for Magento SEO

Recently Google has been sending shockwaves through the SEO community with it’s large algorithm updates. This has changed the playing field and whilst it has made SEO harder it has also opened up a lot of keyword to have a go at. Sites that once dominated the search results have been slapped due to spammy backlink campaigns. Part of the solution moving forward has become great onsite content, not only unique content but relevant and trending content. The best place to build this content is via an onsite blog.

Before the update happened, SEO’s tended to create on site content that was really just to attract the Google search results. This is no longer good enough and the search engines are looking very much at site quality. You might get onto the page one search results for a week or so but if your sites bounce rate is too high, or your site too slow then Google will deem your site to be of low quality and replace you on the rankings. Once you have been to the first page once and been dropped it’s doubly hard to get back to page one, so you need to make sure you site is ready before you go hard on SEO.

Google also likes to see who the author is and will rank the content based on the following of that author. For example is you sell supplements and want to do onsite content then a good choice would be to approach a naturopath who already has a following and credibility in Google’s eyes and then use her to create the articles. These articles will then link to her Google plus page and her blog and this will give the new content some weight.

This can be done for many other industries and here are some examples to explain:

1) If you sell herbs and spices get a head chef who has a social media following to write some content

2) If you sell car parts get a racing driver to write some blog posts for you.

3) If you sell fishing gear get a fishing expert or teacher to share some fishing tips.

there is also a case study in my video here which goes into a bit more detail if you want more information on this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abDiVzbJAfQ

We have also found that writing very timely pieces works well. For example if I want to rank for “VW Car Parts” then I would search on Google News for topics “trending” about VW. I might find that they are launching a new engine and there is a lot of social chatter about it. If I can join this conversation whilst it still early days then I can surf the wave. Sometimes we create an overview of the top industry figures talking about an issue and the people for and against the topic. Google seems to be over compensating for recent information and so this can be used to your advantage.

You link profile is still very important though but its not thousands of links that you need but instead a few quality ones. Google frowns upon paid blog guest posts and paid links but there are still a few ways to create good quality links but this is out of the scope of this book. There are lots of books focusing specifically on SEO and link building.
